GETTING A CSCS CARD TO WORK ON SITE

Job posted on the

Most individuals in the construction industry know that to work as a construction labourer or tradesman on a variety of building sites you need to hold a valid CSCS card. At Frontline Construction Recruitment based in Bletchley, Milton Keynes, we only register people with valid cards – because our clients appreciate the fact that our workforce is 100% qualified, and know they have legitimate reason to be on a building site. But it’s not always obvious how to go about getting one, so this article provides some advice and tips to those needing a CSCS card and wanting to start doing temporary work on construction sites.

  • Apply online to take the Operatives’ Test
  • Call them on 0844 576 8777. The customer service team will then help you choose which variety of card you should apply for and make you aware of any training you will need to undertake to receive you card
  • Speak to your job advisor – if you are a Jobcentre client, why not ask your contact about the CSCS card. Many understand the need for these cards and will be able to help you apply.
  • Go direct to CSCS to avoid being charged more by a separate company.

The basic card requires you to take the Operatives’ Health & Safety Test and once you’ve passed you can then use it to apply for a full card. There are more advanced tests available if you are interested in a particular skill set, or have previous experience in a certain area. Existing qualifications such as NVQs will also assist you in obtaining a more specific ‘Skill Card’, but to get on to a job itself you only need the standard card, so it is up to you as to whether you apply for a more specific card.

If you want to find out more about the questions on the test & practice them, we suggest eBay as a good place to search for cheap books and CD’s.

For more help on getting a CSCS operatives card you can contact our team in Bletchley, Milton Keynes on 01908 639093.

EXPERIENCE CONSTRUCTION AT THE OPEN DOORS WEEKEND

Job posted on the October 17, 2012

On the 9th and 10th of November this year, over one hundred construction sites across the UK will open up to the public to give guided tours. The purpose is to show the construction industry in a different light – giving the public a first hand insight into life on a working site.

The initiative is called Open Doors, and is the first collaborative brainchild of its kind, comprising of several organizations from the building trade: UK Contractors Group (UKCG); Industry Training Board and Sector Skills Council; CITB Construction Skills; Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB); Considerate Constructors Scheme.

So far, twenty-three major construction employers are taking part with the hope of attracting talent into the industry. The idea is to challenge stereotypes often associated with the building trade – re-educating people by presenting it in a more engaging and interesting way. They want those who would otherwise dismiss the idea of a career in the industry to take a closer look at what it can offer them.

By temporarily bringing down the barriers that are usually placed between building sites and passers by, Open Doors is setting out to encourage greater levels of involvement with the public and local communities. These sites are, after all, as much a part of a community as any finished building, as well as being economic contributors at both national and regional levels.

The sites that are open across the two days are incredibly varied in scale, location and project nature. However, there are some significantly high profile ones taking part including the Tate Modern’s new extension in London, Leeds Arena and the Olympics Aquatic Centre.

There is no limit as to the number of sites you can visit, and all entry is completely free of charge.

Open Doors weekend will be taking place at 9am – 4pm on Friday 9th November, and 9am – 1pm on Saturday 10th November.

Any further information, including a full list of locations, can be found on the Open Doors website.

As a recruitment agency for the industry, Frontline Construction is excited at the prospects that the Open Doors initiative can offer. We have seen just how much the building trade has evolved, and how little most people know about the complexity of the industry and its role in society.

As suppliers to contractors all over the UK, we see the importance of advocating any promotion and education that encourages more people to join an industry that we are proud to be part of.

GOVERNMENT LAUNCH NEW CAMPAIGN TO CREATE 140,000 NEW CONSTRUCTION JOBS

Job posted on the September 21, 2012

Every day in Britain the demand for housing grows, and the construction industry is unable to keep up.

With the demand for new homes currently sitting at an estimated 220,000 new properties a year, the construction industry is only building around half of that at the moment.

With that in mind, the government has embarked on major new plans to revitalise the construction industry and give it the major boost it so desperately needs.

The Prime Minister David Cameron, along with Deputy PM Nick Clegg and Communities Secretary Eric Pickles, have unveiled a new housing and planning package that will promise up to 70,000 new homes and £40 billion of funding for new infrastructure projects, £10 billion of which will be spent on new homes.

The most important factor from these proposals is that 140,000 construction jobs will be created as a result of the plans, giving the industry the boost that it craves so much.

The government also propose to relax restrictions on planning laws, which would help unlock 75,000 homes, which have been mothballed due to various reasons.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “The measures announced today show this Government is serious about rolling its sleeves up and doing it all it can to kick-start the economy. Some of the proposals are controversial; others have been a long time in coming.

They provide a comprehensive plan to unleash one of the biggest homebuilding programmes this country has seen in a generation. That means more investment around the county; more jobs for our people; and more young families able to realise their dreams and get on the housing ladder.”

This news comes at the same time that demand for staff working on preconstruction stages of projects is increasing, which could signal a knock-on effect for jobs at the latter stages of the construction process in the next few months.

If you are looking for roles in the construction industry, check out all our of our latest jobs here. To find out more about Frontline Construction Recruitment and what we do, call our office on 01908 639093.
